ESRB Rating:
ESRB Rating Summary
E10+ Mild Lyrics
Release Date: November 15, 2011
Game System: Xbox 360 / Xbox 360 Kinect
Publisher: Majesco
Players: 2
Family Friendly Video Games Approved
Family Friendliness: Alvin and the Chipmunks is a very basic dancing game that is great for kids 7 and under, but isn’t challenging enough to keep kids older than that engaged.  Because of a few of the song lyrics, the game’s rated E 10+, but we think its primary appeal is to kids younger than that.

Highlights:
Surprisingly strong song selection will have adults happily dancing along with their kids.

Kinect camera tracking works great, and kids will especially love seeing themselves on screen during the “Munk Power” and freestyle sections of the game.

Lowlights:
Very basic and repetitive dance moves are great for younger kids, but weren’t enough to engage kids we’ve played with who have played other dancing games such as Just Dance or Everybody Dance.

After a quick quiz to help kids determine which Chipmunk they are, it’s time to dance along with Alvin and Friends to one of 30 different hit songs from the 50s through the 2000s.  In story mode, kids can slowly progress through songs as they watch the Chipmunks make their way through different locations based on the Chipmunks Chipwrecked movie.  But kids can also jump right into all the songs in Free Play mode, even if they haven’t been unlocked as part of the story.

To play, kids will need to simply mirror the actions of the dancing Chipmunks onscreen.  The Kinect camera tracks the entire body, and the scoring process is rather forgiving.  There’s also a cooperative mode that allows players to take turns while dancing.
