Attack of the Movies 3D is a very clever concept that asks your family to utilize the Wii-mote like a “zapper” gun, aiming it at the screen and pushing the B-trigger button to fire at your on-screen enemies. The game uses the premise of putting you in different movies in order to make you go through differently locations and battle giant bugs, ghosts, robots or more. Everything you battle is over-the-top and a bit outrageous (as well as themed as make-believe), so we actually didn’t have a problem with the content being too violent or anything.
The game comes with four 3-D glasses, and the ability to switch the game from “3-D Mode” to “2-D Mode” at any time. Although we applaud the concept and effort, we didn’t really notice much in the way of 3-D effects when we played that mode, except for everything seeming more blue or red. After a few playsessions trying the 3D, we all agreed that we enjoyed the game more on regular “2-D Mode.”
One of the things we really liked about Attack of the Movies 3D is the ability for up to four-players to participate at the same time, sharing the screen and working towards the common goal of defeating all everything they can onscreen. Everyone shares a health meter, so this game truly offers a great experience for playing together.
But we did think Attack of the Movies 3D was really hard. Although you follow a set path and battle enemies, there are only certain places to power up and get more health. We would find ourselves repeatedly getting stuck on the same spots, and unable to defend ourselves enough in order to progress. After hitting this “roadblock” a half-dozen times, the experience simply becomes frustrating instead of fun.
There’s a neat game idea in Attack of the Movies 3D, and we really like how four players can cooperate and play at the same time. Unfortunately, even on easy level, we found the game to be too difficult for our family, but other families may be able to get past that, and enjoy some popcorn-munching, shoot-em-up action together.
We recommend Attack of the Movies 3D only for families with tweens and up who are more skilled gamers. If you’re okay with the zapping on-screen, there is a great opportunity for younger kids to play alongside their older siblings in this one, too.
