The game makes extensive use of the Wii-mote buttons and nunchuk, with the game’s tutorial offering 17 different examples of move combinations, ranging from a simple punch, to a backflip to a jump stomp. The controls in this one are definitely not easy and require some practice and getting used to.
Once you’re ready to begin, you can choose to player either one- or two-player to go through the game’s story. If playing by yourself, the computer will take control of Batman or Robin, whichever one you do not choose.
Controls and gameplay are similar to the popular Lego series of games, but are even simpler, as there is not as much freedom to wander around each level. The game keeps players on a pretty narrow path as they move from left to right through the beautifully detailed and enjoyable levels.
Batman: The Brave and The Bold is presented in the style of the more “campy” Batman, and is somewhat reminiscent of the old Batman TV show starring Adam West. As you work through levels, the story progresses through humorous back and forth banter between Batman and Robin.
Although there are a few puzzles to solve, the majority of the gameplay involves “beating up” the bad guys, so if your family is leery of any sort of physical violence, they’ll want to steer clear of this one.
If your family doesn’t play many video games, then Batman: The Brave and The Bold may be a bit too complex, with its utilization of nearly every button on the Wii-mote and nunchuk, and requirement that many be used in different combinations with each other. Families who do play lots of games together will enjoy the opportunity to cooperate as they work together to fight through and solve each “episode’s” crime. We think some kids who are good with the controllers will enjoy Batman: The Brave and The Bold, despite the game’s E10+ rating, so we recommend this one for families and kids up looking for a fun, if not slightly more complex, cooperative gameplay challenge.
