Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

ESRB Rating:
ESRB Rating Summary
E Mild Cartoon Violence
Release Date: September 15, 2009
Game System: Wii
Publisher: Ubisoft
Players: 2
Family Friendliness: Despite the very enjoyable and entertaining single player game, the only way we recommend playing Cloudy With A  Chance of Meatballs together is if the rest of the family wants to watch one person play it.  Playing cooperatively should be avoided altogether.

Highlights:
-- This is a decent film adaptation – if your family liked the movie, you should enjoy this game

-- Lots of cute and creative gameplay involving oversized food elements and upgradeable weapons.

-- This is a fun single-player game that can be enjoyed either alone or for watch-over-the shoulder style gameplay, but trying to play two-player style will be more frustrating than it is enjoyable.
Lowlights:
-- Multiplayer mode is just too frustrating to recommend.  The player controlling Flint is always the central focus, and their moves will often force Steve the Monkey offscreen.

-- Trying to play together is so frustrating that it warrants a second bullet point.  This game could have been a lot of fun if multiplayer had been differently.  Instead, you will only want to play this game in the enjoyable single player mode.

Game Details:

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is a really fun and cute Wii game, that will especially cater to families that enjoyed the movie.   Players use the nunchuk controller to move Flint Lockwood around the screen, and will use the Wii mote to jump, zap or otherwise use the game’s upgradeable weapons (like a fork or a sprayer).
The overall concept of oversized food elements works really well for a video game.  Toting around a big fork to stab sausages or zapping giant popsicles are just as fun as they are to imagine.  The game’s puzzles and progression can be a little difficult, so having one person play while the other offers advice will actually be a helpful strategy for getting through parts of the games.
The problem with this game is that it comes with a multiplayer mode that lets a second player tag along as Steve the Monkey.  Unlike other cooperative games such as this (like the Lego Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones series), the first player is the constant central focus of the camera and the controls, so unless Steve the Monkey is able to stay right on his tail, he often will be forced back to the center screen, abandoning whatever he was zapping/climbing/driving.  Even in parts where Steve is trying to fulfill the main objective, if Flint wanders to another part of the screen, the second player will be interrupted mid-action, and you’ll have to start over.
So despite the enjoyable single player game, the only way we recommend enjoying Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs together is if the rest of the family wants to watch one person play it.  Playing cooperatively should be avoided altogether.  It’s not that that can’t be a fun time, it’s just that it would have been a blast had the cooperative multiplayer part been able to work better.
