Family Friendliness: We tested Dora and Kai-Lan’s Pet Shelter with kids ranging from 4 to 11 years old.  The younger ones were able to control everything with not problems due to the great verbal instructions given by the game.  The older kids did become a bit bored with the gameplay, but it kept preschoolers and elementary engaged for quite some time.  We also really appreciate how the activities and tips can translate into healthy pet habits in real life.

Highlights:
- Nice use of many different DS controls, including voice into the microphone.

- Verbal instructions make this game playable by even non-readers.

- Educational value in the healthy pet tips and throughout the gameplay.

Lowlights:
- Although kids may be sad to see pets they get attached to sent off, they can still have the opportunity to petsit it from time to time.

Game Details:

Dora & Kai-Lan’s Pet Shelter focuses on the “nurture and play” aspects of animal interaction.  Diego brings animals into the shelter, and it’s up to players to develop relationships with cute bunnies, kittens bears and more.  The goal is to try and adopt as many different pet as possible.

When a new animal arrives at the shelter, kids can choose from one of three names for their pets.  Throughout the course of caring for them, they’ll be asked to perform different caregiving or play activities to help it out.  Some involve the screen and stylus, but others involve using the built-in microphone of the DS.
