Family Friendliness: Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure is very colorful, with rainbows, unicorns and lots of familiar Dora characters.  The game is designed to be easy-to-play for toddlers, and is a good choice for parents looking to enjoy a game alongside their youngsters.

Highlights:

- Helper mode lets parents or older siblings assist toddlers in the mini-game portion, without necessarily letting their kids know they are being helped.

- Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure features simple controls that are designed for toddlers, with good verbal direction for everything and clear diagrams showing how they work.

Lowlights:

- Maybe we’ve seen too much Dora in our times, but it seems like this is full of Dora-cliché overload, as Dora and Boots escape from the mean witch with help from rainbow unicorns.  Dora also seems especially whiney here too.

- Although helper mode is great for the mini-game, it would have been nice to have it throughout the game, as some of the storybook navigation sections could be hard for toddlers.

Game Details:

In celebration of Dora the Explorer’s 10th Birthday Celebration, 2KPlay has released a new Dora the Explorer Wii game tailored just for young fans of the show.

The game makes use of the Wii-mote in a number of different ways.  In the storybook mode, players will tilt the Wii-mote left and right to move, and use the “2” button to jump as well as perform different actions.  These actions can be performed on objects whenever they light up a certain way, and may involve raising a flag, climbing or sliding down a pole, or even having Boots climb into an object.

Throughout the Story mode, players can also play mini-games, which are divided into three different categories.  These mini-games are also playable on their own from the main menu, and consist of racing games, motion games and dancing games.  Racing games are all essentially the same, with players needing to tilt the Wii-mote sideways to avoid obstacles and collect coins.  Motion games are a mixture of waiving the Wii-mote, while also performing certain tasks, such as fixing a bubble with sticky tape.  In dance mode, players simply need to mimic the onscreen actions of the characters.

The game is tailored and designed to be very simple and forgiving, allowing toddlers to have a high degree of success with a low degree of frustration.  Additionally, all the mini-games feature a “helper” mode, in which a parent or older sibling can control the action with a second Wii-mote, in case youngsters need some help.
