Dragon Ball the Revenge of King Piccolo utilizes the Wii-mote and nunchuk controller. This game is ultimately a fighting game, where the point is to do more damage to your opponent then is done to you.
The controls can seem a bit complex, but once you’ve played for awhile, you can start to get the hang of them. Generally speaking, the a-button is the attack button, and moves are complemented by jumping with the right trigger button, or moving the joystick on the nunchuk. But you also use the C button on the tip of the nunchuk, and the z-button on the bottom of the nunchuk plays a key role. Utilizing so many different buttons, you can see that Dragon Ball the Revenge of King Piccolo is definitely not for someone who’s only casually interested in games, as there’s a level of complexity and detail in the combos and button pushing that require a more interested fan.
In the single-player mode, players take off on a side-scrolling adventure (think Super Mario Bros or Sonic, but with a little depth) to recapture the Dragon Balls. Dragon Balls are mythical orbs that have the power to grant wishes when they are all brought together. There’s definitely room here for some cooperative-style encouragement and advice, although there is no actually cooperative gameplay mode.
Where fans of the Dragonball games will really enjoy playing together is in the two-player World Tournament mode. This is where you can pick your favorite character, and go head-to-head in an attempt to drain the other persons health bar. You’ll try and use a mixture of attacks, combo attacks, blocking and counters. Fun can still be had with rather basic button pushing and moving of the Wii-mote though.
Fans of Dragonball will enjoy the single-player campaign, along with its cutscenes taken from the original anime, but unfortunately, this game just isn’t ideal for the casual gamer family who’s not really interested in the series. The multiplayer head-to-head mode is enjoyable, but for those who aren’t familiar with the series, even that can get old and repetitive quickly.
