Family Friendliness:
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is the type of game that can completely absorb a kid for days or weeks on end.  It’s a great single player experience for tweens and up, but it’s high level of detail and use of nearly every button and feature of the 3DS make it better for more advanced gamers.

Highlights:
- Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS is a great single-player experience for tweens and up, with hours and hours of fun, challenging gameplay.

- The dungeon puzzles and time travel mechanic are good brain exercise for players.

- The use of the 3D and gyroscope features of the 3DS is a really cool addition.

Lowlights:
- The graphics look great, and have been updated from the original, but it still feels like a very dated 3D experience, as today’s environments are more realistically shaped, and less blocky.

- There’s a high level of detail required for success here, and there are times when even moms and dads will get stuck and could find themselves frustrated.  Don’t be afraid to use an online walkthrough for help progressing through parts where you can’t figure out what to do next.

Game Details:

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS is a re-creation of the very popular Nintendo 64 game.  The main character in the story is a Link, and he’s on a quest through his homeland of Hyrule to explore various dungeons, forests and other mythical settings to help gain control of an ancient relic.

Although the game is based on a Nintendo 64, the gameplay and graphics have been updated to take advantage of the Nintendo 3DS features.  The game makes heavy use of all the different 3DS buttons as well, as players will need to target enemies, switch items, use a shield, swing a sword and more as part of their quests.  One really cool thing is how the game lets you “look around” when you lock on an enemy – by moving the 3DS around, you change what Link is looking at.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D is a very immersive single-player experience.  There aren’t really any opportunities to play together, but the game does provide hours and hours of exploration and brain-challenging puzzles as part of its dungeons.  For example, players will need to figure out which torches to light in order to progress through a room, or figure out which switch to stand on.

The Ocarina from the game’s title is the instrument that Link plays.  It’s just one of the many layers of complexity that awaits players in this Legend of Zelda game.  From multi-colored faires which accompany you on your journey to different strength materials for items like shields and swords, there are so many details of the world of Hyrule that players will love getting lost in.

One of the other key gameplay elements of Ocarina of Time is the ability for Link to travel forward seven years in time at a location called the Timple of Time.  In the world of the future, Link is an adult, and uses different items than the younger Link.  You’ll need to figure out ways to travel across time to your advantage – for example, magic beans that Link plants as a child will grow large enough to allow older Link to climb them to access different areas.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is the type of game that can completely absorb a kid for days or weeks on end.  It’s a great single player experience for tweens and up, but its high level of detail and use of nearly every button and feature of the 3DS make it better for more advanced gamers.
