Family Friendliness:

If your kids are into karaoke or popular music at all, then your family should love playing Lips Number One Hits.  There are some interesting and sometimes confusing attempts to turn the singing into mini-competitions, but at the end of the day the real fun of this game comes from setting aside your reservations and letting loose with the ones that you love.

Highlights:

--             Fun mix of current popular music with older, memorable songs.

--             Although not recommend for toddlers and kids because of some questionable lyrics on a few songs, there are definitely a good amount of songs at younger kids CAN enjoy.

Lowlights:

--             Competitive mini-games are a cute idea, but it’s sometimes unclear exactly what it is you need to do fulfill the objectives (like making lovers kiss each other, or pouring water on a time bomb)

--             A couple songs have lyrics that you may be uncomfortable to see your kids singing, no matter how old they are

Game Details:

Lips Number One Hits does a fantastic job of turning your Xbox 360 into a karaoke machine.  It’s undoubtedly sure to be a party-favorite, but whether or not it’s right for your family depends on your kids interests.

If your kids like music and singing, then your family will have a blast with Lips Number One Hits.  It’s rated T, which means there are some songs which have lyrics that you may not think are appropriate for your kids, but this is only the case for a few songs, most songs are just innocent, clean fun.  Even younger kids will want to get in on the spectacle and sing along, too, but just make sure you choose from the plenty of songs that don’t have any questionable content.

Lips Number One Hits comes with a microphone included.  Many families may already have another microphone if they purchased the previous Lips game, or if they have one of the band games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero for Xbox 360.

Players sing along with one of 40 songs, which are a mixture of recent popular favorites and older, extremely memorable hits.  Parents will remember the older ones and be able to sing right along, and after a few listens, kids will get the hang of them, too, even if they’d never heard of a group like the Beach Boys before.

Players can sing in vs. mode, which sees both players sing all the words at the same time, or in duet mode, which guides players to sing certain lyrics.  There are background mini-games to choose from to encourage head-to-head battles or cooperation to bring characters closer together, but they honestly can be a bit confusing, and really serve as more of a way to offer variety rather than being a key component to the game’s enjoyment.
