GamerPops.com: Mario Sports Mix sees Mario and friends (and enemies) competing in four different sports: Basketball, Volleyball, Dodgeball, and Hockey. Mario Sports Mix can be a terrific party game for older gamers. For playing with your family, it gets mixed reviews. It does a lot of things well, like easy to pick up controls and fun characters (the awful AI actually is almost a benefit in this case), but has moments of cheapness that can frustrate gamers of any age, especially younger ones who don’t understand why one hockey goal was worth 30 points. If you can put up with trudging through the tournaments to unlock characters and stages and can avoid the cheaper stages as much as possible in Exhibition mode, you’ve got a fun sports title that the whole family will enjoy.

Highlights:
- Great selection of multiplayer modes. Exhibition games can be players vs players, players vs CPUs, or some mixture. You can also tweak the rules in exhibition mode to suit your tastes and audience. Tournament mode can be played with up to three players co-operatively (since all sports can be either 2 on 2 or 3 on 3). This is a great way to play the game together and have the kids help you unlock stuff.
- The controls are easy to pick and up and learn for little ones. Even a three year old was able to play a bit. He didn’t always do much, but it was enough that he felt he was in the game. Controls map similarly to all four games (shake to shoot/attack, A to pass, A+B for special, etc.) and you have the option of playing either with a nunchuk or without.

|
Lowlights:
- Tournaments lock you into the number of players you choose at the start and you can’t change midway through.
- With Mario Sports Mix, certain stages can actually magnify the difference in skill levels of players. If you’re playing a human opponent on certain levels, they can better take advantage of hotspots or extra coins. And after doing nothing all game, suddenly, you couldn’t get the ball away from the CPU when the 10x Rainbow bonus was on. If you’re playing with the kids, I’d keep them off of the Bowser Jr. Blvd. stage for Basketball and Hockey.

INFORMATION FROM COMPANY FACT SHEET
Come Out and Play – On Mario’s Turf
Four great sports make their move to the Mushroom Kingdom: volleyball, basketball, ice hockey and dodgeball. All four are included on one game disc – a great value for Mario™ fans, sports fans and everyone in between.
FEATURES:
• The cast of Mushroom Kingdom characters get together to play sports – Mario style. While the basic rules of the games apply, each one includes some magical Mario twists like coins and special items that ramp up the craziness and fun.
• While playing, gathering coins will build up bonus points. So when players score a point or basket, they also get the added bonus.
• Players collect items like a Koopa Shell to use against their opponents. They can even use special items to beat up on the other team while shooting or spiking. One example of a special ball move is using a Mini Mushroom to shrink the ball before it’s returned to the other side of the volleyball net.
• Each character has a signature move that’s almost impossible for opponents to stop. These include Mario’s fireball moves or Princess Peach’s heart-filled attacks.
• In the field of play, a variety of tricks will keep players on their toes. On DK Dock, the volleyball court will continually slide from left to right. On Bowser Jr. Blvd, the basketball court has bonus circles that frequently appear, offering both positive and negative bonuses that result in extreme point swings.
• In each sport, play with up to three players cooperatively or with up to four players competitively in a two-on-two match.

ESRB Rating Summary: This is a collection of sports games in which players select characters from the Mario, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest franchises to compete in tournaments or exhibitions. As players participate in activities such as basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, and ice hockey, they occasionally use whimsical power-ups (e.g., exploding turtle shells, "cartoony" bombs) that knock characters down and result in a "dizzy star" effect. In one mini-game, players use hockey sticks to whack opponents and knock them off an unsteady platform.
