Family Friendliness: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is fun for nearly all age levels, and offers so many different ways to enjoy the game’s 10 winter Olympic events, that your family will likely be playing this long after winter is over.

Highlights:

-- Even though there are LOTS of characters from Mario and Sonic games to choose from, you can also choose to use your very own Mii to compete in any of the events.

-- The menu system does a really good job of simplifying all the choices.

-- “Dream” events bring an added level of fun, for example, the “Dream Snowboard Cross” adds Mario-Kart style item boxes into the runs, along with huge Sonic-style loops and coins to collect.

Lowlights:

-- Unresponsive controls when trying to ski jump can be a bit frustrating.

-- Speed skating has probably the highest level of difficulty, as timing is crucial to maintaining your speed and making the turns.

-- There’s not much strategy to the Ice Hockey portion of the game, just lots of shooting whenever you can.

Game Details:

There is a LOT to like about Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games.  You can have a quick gameplay session before dinner, or an evening full of family fun, where players can jump in and out of gameplay as they wish.  And it’s all easy to access, with 1 to 4 players able to play in competitive and cooperative events.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games utilizes the Wii-mote in a number of ways to simulate skiing, speed skating, bobsledding and even figure skating.  There are lots of downward shakes, upward flicks, and twisting involved, but it all feels very natural and intuitive.  And with vocal prompts, kids can pretty easily get games up and running with no adult assistance.

There are so many choices available in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.  There are two dozen characters from the Mario and Sonic universes to choose from.  Or, you can choose to play as any of the Miis you have created.  You can play games against each other going for the best score, or cooperatively, working together on the same team.  You can play a quick event, or take part in the game’s Festival mode to sample the entire Winter Olympics experience.  And if that’s not enough, you can even play the party games, which incorporate the Olympic events into an overall game in which the playing field can be leveled out, and the winner isn’t necessarily the one who performs the best in the competitions – for example, depending on how you place in a downhill slalom, you’ll get a certain amount of shots to try and score points by popping balloons.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is fun for nearly all age levels, and offers so many different ways to enjoy the game’s 10 winter Olympic events, that your family will likely be playing this long after winter is over.
