ESRB Rating Summary

Game System: Mac / PC

Family Friendliness: Moshi Monsters is cute and gross at the same time, and will appeal mostly to elementary school-age boys.  However, many of the puzzles involve more advanced math, geography or other subject matters, so younger kids may not be as successful in the game’s puzzles as older kids.

Highlights:
- Cute characters with humorous voices that speak monster-gibberish, although all the game direction and dialogue is in written form.

- Variety of puzzles is surprisingly challenging.  This could be off-putting to younger kids, but sometimes parents can be surprised at how far young minds can be stretched.
Lowlights:
- Sometimes confusing interface takes a bit of getting used to, and you may think you’re stuck on a screen until you figure out you’re supposed to click on the door, or close the gift box you opened.

- “Members Only” sections may encourage kids to want to spend extra money to play.  We understand the developers have to make money, but this does create a “have,” “have-not” mentality that parents need to prepare their kids for.

Game Details:

Moshi Monsters is an online computer game that is played by one player using the mouse and keyboard.  In the game, you adopt a pet monster and work to complete puzzles to earn Rox, the game’s currency.  With your Rox you can visit different parts of town to purchase items to customize your monster, decorate your room or even plant a garden to attract pets for your monster.

The game relies exclusively on reading to give direction and tell players what they need to do.

Moshi Monsters is cute and gross at the same time, and will appeal mostly to elementary school-age boys.  However, many of the puzzles involve more advanced math, geography or other subject matters, so younger kids may not be as successful in the game’s puzzles as older kids.  Despite the game’s boasts of large numbers of players, in essence it really is a single player game, although the game can be enjoyed by a parent watching over a kids shoulder and offering encouragement and suggestions.

Moshi Monsters is a free game, but as with many online games, there’s also an option to upgrade your account to be able to visit special “members only” sections of the town.

Moshi Monsters also introduces some “light social networking” as the site refers to it.  You can add monsters to be your friend if you know the monster’s owner’s name.  While this seems secure, there are a few ways in game to find out other monsters owner’s names as well.  But the friend request much be accepted on the other end, so it may be a good idea to advise your kids to only accept friends requests from people they definitely know.

A typical gameplay session in Moshi Monsters will see the player enter their home, check their messages, perform a few puzzles to earn some Rox, and then enter the town to purchase items or search for moshlings.  There’s a limit to how many Rox you can earn a day, which encourages shorter play sessions, but also rewards playing daily (naturally).

For our family, the “limited social networking” features of the site didn’t really factor in to our enjoyment of the basic gameplay.
