Family Friendliness: The basic gameplay of NBA Jam makes it surprisingly easy to perform awesome basketball moves.  We found it hard to play this game without a smile on our face.  And with a number of options for both competitive and cooperative play, including options for three players to play at the same time, we think NBA Jam is a perfect game for families to play together.

Highlights:
- Fun, over-the-top NBA action will bring a smile to your face every time you pull of a monster aerial dunk, and the announcer says Boom-Shaka-Laka.

- Great selection of cooperative and competitive modes provide lots of different ways for families to enjoy NBA Jam.
Lowlights:
- One of the game aspects is shoving to steal the ball from your opponent.  Granted, stealing is a part of basketball, but the shoving aspect seems a bit over the top and borderline violent in a game that’s otherwise very cartoony and fun.

- It’s a minor point, but there are only certain players available on each NBA team, so it’s possible that your family’s favorite player may not be in this game.

Game Details:

NBA Jam is basketball game which features over-the-top action, such as huge dunks, lots of behind-the-back passes, and even some shoving.  Although the game features real NBA team and players, the action is more like that of a cartoon.  The result is an experience that is makes it surprisingly easy to pull of cool moves on the court, and makes NBA Jam a game that provides a great head-to-head competitive experience.

Up to four players can play NBA Jam at a time, and each player will need a Wii-mote and nunchuk.  Although you can jump right in and play, we definitely recommend attending the five minute “Jam Camp” option, in which you’ll quickly learn how to run, shoot, block, steal and shove.

Families can jump right in to the game’s Classic Mode, or try some of the game’s “Remix” modes, which essentially are opportunities to make the game even more cartoony, and includes many different “power-ups” scatter throughout the court.

In a typical game, players will take part in four quick quarters of two on two action, working to pass, steal and dunk the ball to score more points than their opponent.  If anyone in your family is familiar with previous NBA Jam games (which came out more than 10 years ago), then they’ll likely recognize that EA was able to get the same announcer, and also has kept much of the same feel of the earlier games, including the ability for players to “catch fire” by making three baskets in a row.

Despite the fact that game uses the nunchuk and some interesting button combination, including the “C” button on the nunchuk and the “B” trigger on the Wii-mote, the game is ultimately easy-to-play, and players can find themselves dunking simply by running towards the rim, and flicking up and then down with the Wii-mote.

There also are a number of really cool game modes in NBA Jam which provide opportunities for cooperation and competition, including some modes designed specifically for three players.  These include 21, a one-on-one battle to 21 points; Elimination, in which up to four players play rounds of action, and the lowest score is eliminated each time; and Domination, in which players try to make shots from different parts of the court in order to gain control of that area.

The basic gameplay of NBA Jam makes it surprisingly easy to perform awesome basketball moves.  We found it hard to play this game without a smile on our face.  And with a number of options for both competitive and cooperative play, including options for three players to play at the same time, we think NBA Jam is a perfect game for families to play together.
