Nintendo’s new 3DS handheld system has a lot of fun features to play with, even when you’re not playing games.  A lot of this fun is centered around creating your Mii, which is your own personal onscreen representation, using the 3DS App called Mii Maker.

Wii owners will be familiar with the Mii, and also know that it’s possible to spend a lot of times, sometimes even hours, just tweaking your Mii to get it exactly right.  Since the 3DS has a built-in camera on the front of the system (in addition to the dual-camera 3D system on the outside of the case), players can snap a picture of themselves and, at least theoretically, get a headstart as part of the 3DS Mii Maker.

In our experience, however, the Mii Maker is not exactly perfect, and can have sometimes humorous and sometimes depressing results, since the camera is much more brutally honest than what our own minds eye’s ideal self-image is.

For example, the Mii Maker insisted on giving me a very large nose.  I don’t think I have a very big nose, but my 3DS certainly does.

My wife had a similar experience. She thinks she has a nice smile, yet the Mii Maker gave her a weird frumpy one.  However, she is extremely happy that the Mii Maker didn’t try and give her bags under her eyes, even though we’ve got young kids and seem to always be a little tired.
