Family Friendliness:

Press Your Luck 2010 Edition is a darn good recreation of the classic gameshow from the ‘80s, and hits just the right combination of luck and skill to make for an enjoyable, quick and unpredictable game experience for families with kids of nearly all ages.

Highlights:

-- Press Your Luck provides a relatively quick (10-15 minutes) gameplay session that can engage both those playing and those who may be watching.

-- Parents whe liked the original game show will really enjoy the details that have been faithfully recreated.

-- Whether or not you succeed at trivia, everyone still has a chance to win when it comes time to spin and avoid the Whammy.

Lowlights:

--Although relatively simple for adults, trivia questions can definitely be challenging for kids, who just don’t have the knowledge base to name a certain “Friends” character, or identify facts about a movie’s plot.

-- The  host and contestants maintain a pretty constant level of excitement (or lack of it), leaving it up to your family to identify and enjoy the tension of the dramatic final spins.

-- Even though the Whammy animations are still entertaining, it would have been nice to hear the whammy’s familiar cackle.

Game Details:

Press Your Luck 2010 Edition is a darn good recreation of the classic gameshow from the ‘80s.  And even though there’s a trivia element to the game which some kids may have a tough time with, that doesn’t diminish from the overall point of the game, which is to try and get the most money while avoiding the Whammys.

For starters, players use their wii-motes as “buzzers”, flicking downward to buzz in to answer a trivia question that is slowly revealing.  Players that buzz in first and get the correct answer based on only the part of the question that is visible will get three spins, while other players will be able to see the entire question and choose from one of three answers for the chance to earn one spin.  After four questions, players take turns going to the whammy board.

Once again, the Wii-mote is used as in a downward flicking motion, this time as a stopper.  Players attempt to earn as much as possible without hitting the dreaded Whammy, who will take away all your money.  By design, the whammy is a common occurrence, so part of the strategy of this game is to not have to take too many “spins” so that you don’t lose everything.

Because spins are not a premium, younger kids who only start each round with one or two spins will still have a chance to win at the end.

In the end, Press Your Luck 2010 Edition hits just the right combination of luck and skill to make for an enjoyable, quick and unpredictable game experience for families with kids of nearly all ages.
