Raving Rabbids Travel in Time is a very entertaining Wii game with a distinct sense of humor that can be enjoyed by up to 4-players. These Rabbids will travel across time and civilizations, but are anything but civilized.
The game is controlled using the Wii-mote and nunchuk, and actions are performed in a variety of ways. Although at times you walk around using the joystick on the nunchuk as you’d expect, you’ll also need to control your Rabbids at various times by pointing at the screen, or by outstretching your arms and pretending you are flying.
Instructions in Raving Rabbids Travel in Time are given by telling players what not to do. “No Smashing the Floor” means that you need to smash this floor. Or the game may tell you "don’t throw the key into the lock” while showing you that pressing the B button puts the key into the lock.
To say that the Rabbids engage in bathroom humor would probably be giving them a complement, considering that the game starts by asking you to create a profile in, what else, a bathroom. And it only degenerates from there. Multiple players will have to navigate the select hub simultaneously, as they are attached by toilet paper. The first mini-game we played involved the Rabbids eating beans aboard the Titanic so the Rabbids could fart. Mini-games involving running are symbolized by a roll of toilet paper.
The different mini-game categories are flying, targeting, running, bouncing, and even an area with games designed just for the Wii-mote plus. It’s kind of cool how the game is divided into these categories, and each “selection hub” requires you to use the controls in order to select the game.
Each mini-game also has a different historical theme, so you may end up in King Arthur’s time chasing Merlin, or in ancient Egypt, or the Gold Rush era wild west. Each theme actually does seem to have some historical significance, so at the very least kids are being exposed to it, but it could also be a nice conversation starter as well.
It’s not really possible to quickly switch between these games, though, as you’ll have run through the 2-D (view from the side) and 3-D (view from above) worlds to get from place to place.
Raving Rabbids Travel in Time is a great game for families to enjoy together, provided they’ve got the sense of humor for it. We like how the game provides the ability for players to jump in and out of the action at will, and offers lots of different gameplay types. Although there is a distinct bathroom humor theme woven throughout the game, it’s actually done really well. Raving Rabbids Travel in Time seems to us like the perfect game for families with young boys, blending elements of competition, cooperation and even some education on historical events. Dads will love being able to share the humor, and moms and sisters won’t be more grossed out than what they normally probably are.
