Redneck Jellyfish
Redneck Jellyfish is probably best described as a puzzle game where players navigate a jellyfish (who happens to be a hat-wearing redneck) around ocean levels, collecting seeds to help grow more coral.
Players will need to tap the screen to direct their jellyfish as they try and pick up coral seeds with their sticky tentacles. Once they’ve done that, they can drag them over to the existing coral to create more. Players can advance levels by creating a pre-set amount of coral (indicated by a red bar) within a certain time limit (indicated by a white bar).
Maneuvering the jellyfish is actually a bit difficult, since they must swim like a jellyfish in order to get where they go. It takes some getting used to, and is also complicated by the fact that if you touch to close to the jellyfish’s head, he’ll lose his sticky tentacles for a few seconds and drop whatever he’s carrying. This is a useful game mechanic in some levels, but can be frustrating when you don’t intend to it.
Each level consists of a bunch of coral scattered around the ocean, and it’s up to you to pick it up and grow it into more coral. Along the way you’ll need to pick up and move objects, work with starfish and around sea urchins, and even eat plankton to release “fart bubbles” to capture other creatures.
What we really like about Redneck Jellyfish is that it actually provides some educational value as part of its gameplay. Even though you are basically just collecting items to bring to central point, the use of aquatic creatures and settings makes it feel as if you’re learning a little bit while you do it.
We also like the addition of the Redneck element to add a nice sense of humor to the game. But although we liked the twang of the “redneck” voice of the jellyfish, we couldn’t always tell what he was saying. As we think about it, that’s probably pretty similar to trying to understand a real redneck when they speak (remember how they had to put subtitles on the screen for Ralph in Survivor this past season?).
Although Redneck Jellyfish is cute and offers a relatively simple gameplay premise, we found the controls to be a bit difficult, making this one a bit too hard for pre-schoolers. With its great sense of humor and aquatic subject matter, though, we have no problem recommending this one for older kids and tweens. With 64 levels, there’s plenty of family fun to be had in Redneck Jellyfish.
Information from App Store Description:
Gus Hickey is a Jellyfish. His job is to build coral reefs. Using his tentacles he can pick up objects like coral seeds and drop them on coral to build new coral. Sounds easy right? Not when he's got to contend with crabs, barnacles, sea urchins, giant clams and jumping crabs that can all cut off his tentacles!
Not too mention the zombie hermit crabs that can kill coral.
Luckily for Gus, his head is indestructable. He also gets gas when he eats zooplankton. That's a good thing because he can shoot fart bubbles at crabs.
He's also pretty good freinds with the starfish. Starfish each sea urchins and poop out coral seeds that Gus can use to build coral with.
