Sonic Colors DS is an all-new Sonic adventure for the Nintendo DS that brings back the magic of some of the earliest Sonic games, while adding a few cool new gameplay twists.
In the game, players will control Sonic by using the d-pad to run, and two of the buttons to jump and perform actions. The controls are very simple, and so is the gameplay.
In each level, players take control of Sonic to try and progress through to the end of level, with multiple ways possible in order to reach it. While traveling through the levels, Sonic collects rings, and as long he has at least one ring, he can’t be defeated by enemies. This is something that has traditionally helped make Sonic a very family-friendly offering which can be enjoyed by even young kids – players will almost always have a few a rings, so even if they run into an enemy, they don’t automatically “die.”
One of the really cool things about Sonic Colors DS is how it makes use of both the top and bottom screen as Sonic goes up or down in a level. It makes the levels seem even bigger, and we really liked how Sonic would travel between the two as he was sliding on a rail, going through a tube, or even just performing a big jump.
In the game, Sonic is traveling through a new interstellar amusement park created by his longtime nemesis Dr. Eggman. It’s up to Sonic to help free the magical aliens which Dr. Eggman has imprisoned in order to help him power his attractions. These aliens can help Sonic perform special powers, such as drilling through the ground, launching into the air as a rocket, or even shooting quickly across levels as a green laser beam. As with most classic Sonic gameplay moves, they look really cool and are really simple to perform.
What we love about Sonic Colors for the Nintendo DS is the way that even new players will be able to have success, since all you need to do is have at least one ring so an enemy won’t damage you. We also love how there’s so many different ways to go through each level, so whether you go on the top screen, the bottom screen, or even in between, you’ll definitely want to play through each level again and again. While it’s hard to recommend a way to play any DS game together (unless you have more than one DS), we think that Sonic Colors for DS is accessible enough that gamers of nearly all ages and skill levels can enjoy it.
