Sonic Freeriders

ESRB Rating:
ESRB Rating Summary
E Mild Cartoon Violence
Release Date: November 4, 2010
Game System: Xbox 360 Kinect
Publisher: SEGA
Players: 4
Family Friendliness: GamerPops.com:  While Sonic Free Riders does nothing to offend with its content, the difficulty in controlling the characters and navigating the menu systems will likely lead to frustration from little ones. If you somehow are able to get past the control issues, we’re talking about Sonic here. Everything’s cartoony and sterile, and it is something you could play with your little ones, especially the tag and/or relay races. Just be aware that your frustrations could cause cursing. Unfortunately, the control issues take away from this fun factor in a significant way.

Highlights:
- Sonic Free Riders is a great concept: Kart-style racing with your favorite characters on a hoverboard at high speed with upgradable gear  using just your own body for a controller.  Sounds like a blast, but…
Lowlights:
- … the problem is, the controls don’t always work. Steering was often difficult to pull off, especially when leaning backwards.

*FamilyFriendlyVideoGames.com Favorite* - This was one of our favorite family-friendly video games we saw at the E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles in June.  Here's what we had to say about it then:

Sonic Freeriders is one of Sega’s first games for Microsoft’s Kinect camera system, and the game looks to star Sonic and a few of his friends.

Sonic Freeriders puts you in control of the Sonic characters as they ride boards down the mountain.  You’ll need to use your whole body in different motions which resemble surfing, skating and sometimes even swimming.

The game will have a single player mode as well as multiplayer mode with two player split screen, which means both players can play at the same time.

With its full body controls and use of two-player split screen multiplayer, we’re definitely looking forward to Sonic Freeriders when it comes out around the time of the launch for Kinect this holiday season.
