SpongeBob’s Boating Bash transports you to Bikini Bottom, where you need to help SpongeBob obtain the one thing he wants more than anything – his boating license. But since he continues to fail his actual drivers’ test, he’s been taken under the wing (or gill) of a shyster driving instructor, who promises to license him based on the principles of destruction and recklessness.
With the Wii-mote held sideways and used like a steering wheel, you’ll need to tilt to the left or right to steer, and use the buttons to accelerate and brake. Although it sounds pretty simple, the controls are pretty sensitive, and there is also a chance to “floor it” for quick acceleration, and to use the “handbrake” for a quick stop.
The gameplay is a mixture of demolition derby and racing around a track, although even the racing levels do place an emphasis on doing damage to your opponents. While it may sound a bit aggressive, it’s actually great fun and fits right in with the SpongeBob universe, with familiar characters Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and more all sharing humorous quips throughout the action and introductory scenes.
SpongeBob SquarePants Boating Bash is a fun single player game, but also makes for some quick and exciting multiplayer sessions. Kids who are old enough to enjoy the SpongeBob TV show who are able to perform some precise controls with the Wii-mote will love the opportunity to smash and beat their siblings and parents, all in a nice re-creation of Bikini Bottom.
