Tangled for Wii is an adventure-style game that places a heavy emphasis on cooperation, and is best enjoyed with two players, but can even accommodate up to four.
Players will take control of the two main characters of the Disney’s Tangled movie, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. In a two player game, each player will control one of the characters, and in the single-player game, players will need to switch back and forth between the two, as various parts of the game required either Rapunzel or Flynn’s skillset to advance through.
There’s also the option for a third and fourth player to join in, and they will use their cursor pointed at the screen and can help collect items or clear obstacles, and even stun enemies. The third player will become Rapunzel’s assistant, and the fourth player become’s Flynn’s.
One other very cool thing about Tangled is the flexible control scheme. You can use a nunchuk if you’d like, but the game also offers the option to be controlled without it. This is a welcome mode since many families may not have multiple nunchuks.
The gameplay itself in Tangled is a bit challenging. Although the game details the backstory of Rapunzel, and each scene begins with more of the story unfolding, specific direction within the game is not always given. When you first start, you’ll find yourself in Rapunzel’s tower, and it’s up to you to explore the room and see the options in each doorway. You’ll eventually figure out you need to access the map and find the only location that’s not locked. It’s not very intuitive, and families who aren’t that used to playing games will get easily lost.
To progress though the game and unlock “quickplay” items, players will need to really cooperate. There are some objects that Flynn will need to break with his sword. There are other times where Rapunzel will need swing across a large gap with her hair, and find a place to let her hair down to let Flynn climb up. And there are even places where one player needs to stand on the end of a teeter-totter like plank, and have the other jump on the other hand in order to access high places.
Disney’s Tangled videogame puts an emphasis on cooperation, and provides many flexible control options for families. The adventure-style gameplay and sense of humor should appeal to older kids and tweens, but the game does not do a great job of providing a lot of direction on what to do next. Many families may see this as a benefit, though, as the game is not just a collection of mini-games, but rather feels like an experience that even advanced and serious gamers should be able to enjoy together.
