Game System: Wii
Publisher: Namco Bandai

Family Friendly Video Games Approved
Family Friendliness: Because of the difficulty, We Cheer 2 remains hard to recommend for younger kids.  Tweens and Teens, however, should have no problem with the game’s dance moves, and if mom and dad are willing to let down their inhibitions just a bit in the name of playing a fun and challenging game with their kids, then it’s a great and fun addition to a family’s Wii library.

Highlights:

-- Tutorials really help explain the game, and new players are almost forced to take part in them, which is highly recommended.

-- Diverse soundtrack is an upbeat collection that includes some songs (like Mickey by Tony Basil) that might even be older than some parents.  (Please note we’re including this as a highlight though, because we love the mixture of the old and new.)

-- The freestyle mode during the bonus section of each song is a hilarious way to let loose and move your Wii-motes as fast as you can in any direction.

Lowlights:

-- The game’s outfit customization colors are totally confusing.  There’s a drab assortment of default colors, and you can create your own by tweaking red, blue and green levels.  We finally figured out how to make orange, but don’t ask me to explain how or why it worked.

-- Don’t sweat trying to be perfect, as sometimes the movement detection seems like it can be imprecise.  It’s noticeable, but unless you’re trying to be completely perfect, it shouldn’t ruin your enjoyment of the game.

Game Details:

We Cheer 2 offers challenging gameplay mechanics, wrapped in bubble-gum teeny pop cheerleader packaging.  Players are challenged to follow along to mimic the moves of the onscreen cheerleaders, performing cheer moves while holding the wii-mote like they would a pom-pom.

Players can choose to play with a wii-mote in each hand, and since the Wii supports four remotes, then up to two players can play in this style at the same time.  Routines can also be done with players holding only the Wii-mote in their right hands, so up to four players can play in this mode.

We Cheer 2 offers a great tutorial, to help you slowly learn the different techniques needed in order to be successful.  Once that’s complete, performing a few cheers on the easiest difficulty is relatively simple, and right away you begin to unlock more songs, more venues and more outfits for your cheerleaders.

There are also more than 2 dozen cheerleaders that players can choose from, including a good assortment of male cheerleaders.

Each song you play starts out with the Beginner and Intermediate difficulties unlocked.  If you can get down the basics of the Tutorial mode, which is highly recommended for anyone playing the game, then the Beginner versions should be fairly simple for tweens and teens.  But Intermediate and Advanced difficulties truly are better suited for those with more experience, as there are lots of movement combinations that just won’t make sense to a first time player.

The game offers a couple of multiplayer modes that involve trying to not pop balloons, but the controls are just imprecise enough and the objective is just confusing enough that you’ll likely have more fun just performing the cheers side by side rather than trying out these “party” modes.

Because of the difficulty, We Cheer 2 remains hard to recommend for younger kids.  Tweens and Teens, however, should have no problem with the game’s dance moves, and if mom and dad are willing to let down their inhibitions just a bit in the name of playing a fun and challenging game with their kids, then it’s a great and fun addition to a family’s Wii library.
