uDraw Studio comes bundled with the THQ’s uDraw Tablet, and is a surprisingly robust art tool that contains features to satisfy talented artists, while providing enough basic fun for anyone up for grabbing the stylus.
Players will control the menu system for uDraw Studio by using a light movement of the stylus to drag the cursor across the screen. When players need to make a selection, they’ll need to press down harder. Many of the drawing tools have similar controls. A light touch simply moves the cursor around, but a harder push will start putting colors onto your virtual canvas. These controls do take a bit of getting used to, and one thing we found ourselves doing was trying to control the stylus like a mouse (quickly lifting it up and “backtracking” to try and move faster).
uDraw Art Studio also makes use of the Wii-mote and stylus buttons for various functions. The plus and minus buttons are undo and redo, and pushing up and down on the d-pad will zoom in and out of your drawing.
As with many art programs, uDraw Studio provides options for using a brush, crayon, chalk and more, while being able to control the size of the line. Because of the pressure-sensitive stylus, players can also select to have how hard they are pushing impact their drawing as well. There’s also the ability to stamp on different shapes, use a paint bucket to fill in large areas of color and more.
There is also a “coloring book” feature in uDraw Studio which provides already-created line drawing for youngsters (or parents) to use as a starting point, and they can choose to color them however they’d like. Although this type of feature often appeals to toddlers, the pressure-sensitive stylus and complex menu selection system are too difficult for them. However, kids that are as young as 5 or 6 can definitely get the hang of it.
uDraw Studio also has a couple of really cool features. One feature that’s cool is the ability to play back the creation of your drawing step-by-step in a replay mode. Additionally, the game lets you save your artwork as JPEGs to an SD card (if you know what that means, you’ll think it’s cool), so you can pretty easily save and print them just like you would a photo you took on your digital camera.
THQ’s uDraw Studio is a great demonstration of many of the capabilities of the company’s uDraw Tablet control system. The art program is robust enough that it will provide an interesting and challenging medium for accomplished artists, yet accessible enough for kids as young as 5 or 6 to be able to have fun with it. Although there isn’t technically even a game here, it is possible to enjoy this title together, whether it’s collaborating on making something by sharing the uDraw, or just sharing your work with your family when you are done.
